Connection
Immersion SA is connection with people from other cultures, connection with people from different mindsets, connection with one another as human beings, connection with the environment and connection with the planet.
Globalization and global tools, such as television, radio, cell phones and the internet have created more and more opportunities to associate with different ideas, various cultures, styles of music, diverse beliefs etc. People are watching strangers from far off countries die on the evening news, they are dating online, having sex over the net, and arguing in blogs or supporting one another in online forums. Facebook, and other social networking sites, allow you to be friends with people you’ve never met or nostalgically cling to people from a distant past, whose latest baby photos or drunken party pictures have little relevance to your life. Connecting in this way has become a diversion, a kind of entertainment and a passing of time.
Immersion SA is about real connection in physical spaces with people and the planet. The superficiality of the cyber world has its place, but is best left suspended for a time as you enter a realm of close connection, reality, honesty and physicality. You won’t be flicking the channels and travelling from Ireland to Mexico, living vicariously through the experiences of others. You will be that traveller yourself, tasting strange foods (like a sheep’s head) talking in new ways (with a click here and there), relating to people using gestures and acting like a tree (because saying “which way to the forest?” is too difficult).
Immersion SA is your connection to others, to yourself, to the planet. You will feel your place within the connected system as you experience the environment dictating your daily consumption of water and energy. If it doesn’t rain, then your life will be altered. If it rains abundantly, you will benefit. You will notice how much waste you produce and where your waste goes as you will be connected rather than disassociated from your life and your actions. Through the local and global community, we connect.
“The first living cell came into being nearly 40 million centuries ago, and its direct descendants are in all of our bloodstreams. Literally you are breathing molecules this very second that were inhaled by Moses, Mother Teresa, and Bono. We are vastly interconnected. Our fates are inseparable. We are here because the dream of every cell is to become two cells. And dreams come true. In each of you are one quadrillion cells, 90 percent of which are not human cells. Your body is a community, and without those other microorganisms you would perish in hours.”- Paul Hawken
“Two objects- two electrons that are created together are entangled. Send one to other side of the universe. Now, do something to one and the other responds instantly. Instantly. So either information is travelling infinitely fast, or, in reality, they are still connected.” From Down the Rabbit Hole (Entanglement Theory)
